the search for the true self

If you look closely enough, you can see a human being, alone, in the middle of the ocean. It’s just them and the surrounding nature.

I sat on the edge of the cliff in awe of this vision. They were a speck in the middle of this vast body of water, so far out, with no one else nearby, entirely alone and immersed in their own presence.

I watched how they waited for the wave to build and how they gracefully glided along the crest. When the wave made its break, I saw how they were tumbled into the ocean and how they reclaimed their board to paddle back out again.

The search for the true self feels just like that: a practice of presence, patience, grace, and resilience.

It takes immense courage to be by yourself and to also look inside. To let go of everything you thought you needed to be, to be loved. Life is here to show you that you have always been loved and this requires no effort on your part.

The search for the true self will feel painful. So. many. waves. crashing. down…but remember: hasn’t this happened many times before? And haven’t you found your way up again?

The search for the true self will make you feel like you are in the middle of the ocean…alone. It is frightening. It is confronting. Yet the search for the true self brings the most precious gift we could ever ask for: our truth — the knowing of who we really are beyond our greatest fears.

Let the discomfort rise when you are alone. Do not escape. Feel. Release. See what remains….

….you 🕊️
